The WHO – World Health Organization – Surgical Safety Checklist is a tool designed to improve the safety of surgical procedures by bringing together the whole operating team (surgeons, anaesthesia providers and nurses) to perform key safety checks during vital phases of perioperative care:
Introducing the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist into operating theaters in eight different hospitals was associated with marked improvements in surgical outcomes. Postoperative complication rate fell by 36% on average, and death rates were reduced to a similar degree. The overall rates of surgical-site infections and unplanned reoperation also declined significantly.
